ASGBI Strategic Vision
2025-2026
As President of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI) for 2025-2026, I am honoured to lead our association at a time of tremendous potential for growth, innovation, and impact.
Our mission remains steadfast: to advance surgical excellence and patient care as the preeminent professional body for general surgeons in Great Britain and Ireland. The objectives I outline below are rooted in our core values of Excellence, Collaboration, and Inclusion.
This strategic vision for 2025-2026 is designed to provide clear, actionable guidance to our committees, Directors, and partners, ensuring our work remains aligned with ASGBI’s mission and goals. Each objective aims to guide our association’s initiatives, partnerships, and investments, laying a strong foundation for ASGBI’s continued growth and leadership.
Develop a comprehensive educational strategy aligned with the general surgical curriculum
Supports goals of advancing surgical Excellence and Innovation by ensuring ASGBI
provides cutting-edge, relevant educational offerings
- Appoint a Director of Trauma to ensure Trauma is at the forefront of the ASGBI
- As leaders in EGS and Trauma, to Collaborate with the general surgery SAC, NHSE and JCST to develop specific curriculum content and resources
- Collaborate with the Moynihan Academy to ensure the needs of medical students and Residents are being met
- Expand educational content at ASGBI Congress in General Surgery, EGS and Trauma
- Expand collaboration with other societies and providers of education
Commission and lead the development of evidence-based guidelines and clinical pathways for EGS to improve
patient outcomes
Advances surgical excellence by standardising EGS practices across member institutions
- Through the EGS Committee and its workstreams publish findings, and create training sessions for ASGBI members on new guidelines
Strengthen partnerships with Royal Colleges
Promotes excellence and collaboration by leveraging the expertise and networks of the Royal Colleges
- Formalise joint projects, co-sponsor educational workshops, and increase representation of Royal Colleges in ASGBI events and ASGBI at Royal College events
Promote sustainability in surgical practices
Supports long-term excellence and innovation by focusing on sustainability
- Work with our sustainability lead to collaborate with suppliers for sustainable options and educate members on waste-reducing techniques in surgical practice
- Collaboration with industry partners to enhance environmentally sustainable equipment usage
Strengthen financial management and revenue diversification
Ensures long-term Excellence and sustainability by securing ASGBI’s financial health, allowing continued investment in strategic initiatives
- Conduct a financial review to assess current revenue sources and identify new opportunities, including partnerships and grants
- Develop an annual financial plan prioritising funding for key projects, such as website development, congress expansion, and educational development
- Build solid reserves, create a ‘war chest’ of funding
Enhance ASGBI’s digital infrastructure, including website and membership Systems
Supports Excellence and Inclusion by providing an accessible, user-friendly platform for all members and enhancing ASGBI’s reach and
engagement
- Redesign ASGBI website for improved navigation, content accessibility, and mobile compatibility to better serve members and attract new audiences
- Implement an integrated membership management system to streamline new member registration, renewals, and engagement tracking
- Set up project groups / task force to oversee the transition of systems
Elevate ASGBI as a truly international society
Supports goal of representing general surgeons globally and engaging with international stakeholders
- Establish dedicated collaboration teams to consult with international partners (SAGES, WSES, BHS)
- Sponsor and participate in joint symposiums, workshops, and congresses
Promote international participation at ASGBI Congress
Fosters Excellence and Collaboration through a globally focused congress and high standard educational offerings
- Launch targeted outreach inviting international attendees
- Include programming for comparative surgical practices
- Consider reduced fees or travel grants for surgeons from under-represented regions
Expand and diversify ASGBI membership
Reinforces Inclusion and Diversity, ensuring ASGBI reflects and serves a diverse membership
- Maintain the current culture of fairness and diversity in surgery
- Encourage members to take part in national processes such as shortlisting, interviewing for National Selection to surgery and examining both MRCS and FRCS
- Develop programs to support all members
- Promote ASGBI’s inclusive community across social media, conferences, and educational programs
Strengthen partnership with BJS Academy to broaden ASGBI’s reach
Advances Excellence by using BJS Academy’s reach to expand ASGBI’s educational resources
- Develop joint educational resources (modules, webinars) with BJS Academy
- Create content on emerging techniques and practices in surgery
- Engage BJS Academy’s marketing channels for cross-promotion
Develop an “Issues in Professional Practice” series on medicolegal matters
Supports Excellence by equipping surgeons with knowledge to navigate legal complexities in practice
- Form a task force with legal experts and BJS Academy contributors
- Host webinars/workshops on medicolegal topics
- Promote the guide at ASGBI congress and online platforms
Expand ASGBI’s research portfolio through partnerships and our Sub- Speciality Lead in EGS
Invests in Innovation and Research, advancing surgical science and patient outcomes
- Foster partnerships with new and emerging societies / organisations
- Seek funding or grants for collaborative research
- Promote ASGBI research initiatives through publications and congress presentations
