Trauma

The Trauma Committee is dedicated to advancing trauma care through leadership in education, practical oversight of national training events, research, and clinical excellence.

ASGBI aims to be the professional embodiment of the trauma general surgeon. Trauma surgery is a core pillar of general surgical practice and lacks representation elsewhere. This committee supports ASGBI’s role in leading trauma innovation, multidisciplinary learning, and research, positioning it as a national and international voice in trauma care.

WORKING GROUPS

Strategy

  • Support and initiate collaborative research projects.
  • Coordinate with ASGBI's Research Committee, Moynihan Academy and NaTRIC.
  • Engage with HQIP, RCS, and NCPOD for large-scale projects (e.g., national laparotomy database).
  • Identify two new priority research areas annually.

Research

  • Use data to develop guidelines and workforce standards.
  • Aim to unify practice across trauma centres nationally (recognising variation across MTCs and TUs).
  • Develop links with military and humanitarian surgery partners.
  • Conduct national workforce surveys.
  • Lead development of trauma care guidelines(e.g., rib fractures).
  • Oversight of policy, standards, and institutional partnerships.

Education and Platforms

  • Develop trauma content for the ASGBI Annual Congress, including a pre-congress trauma course, and themed webinars.
  • Contribute to national curriculum development and trauma training initiatives.
  • Maintain and expand the trauma section of the ASGBI website (e.g., fellowships, educational material).
  • Produce and promote trauma podcasts, webinars, and "Trauma Shorts" (1-page educational infographics).

Development and Mentorship

  • Empower trainees from early medical school onwards.
  • Develop grassroots engagement and mentorship programmes (including medical students and residents).
  • Highlight trauma surgery as a career pathway.
  • Align closely with the Moynihan Academy.
  • Host medical student engagement projects and mentorship schemes.
