Moynihan Travelling Fellowship

The Moynihan Travelling Fellowship, is an award of up to £10,000. This is the ASGBI’s most prestigious award which is open to members of the ASGBI, including residents, specialist registrars, SAS surgeons, and consultants actively practicing in general surgery or its sub-specialties.

This Fellowship offers an opportunity to broaden surgical education and represent British and Irish surgery on an international stage.

Eligibility

To apply, candidates must:

  • Be current members of the ASGBI.
  • Be residents of the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland.
  • Be actively engaged in general surgery or one of its sub-specialties.

Application Process

An application must be submitted online by 31st March 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview with the ASGBI Executive Board on 15th April.

Selection Criteria

The ASGBI Executive Board will assess applications based on:

  • Originality and feasibility of the proposed itinerary.
  • The potential impact on personal and professional development.
  • The candidate’s ability to act as an ambassador for British and Irish surgery.

Recognition and presentation

Awardees will receive a commemorative plaque featuring the ASGBI coat of arms. This will be presented at the ASGBI International Surgical Congress, after completion of travels, accompanied by a photo opportunity to celebrate their achievement

Terms and Conditions

  • Successful applicants must complete their Fellowship within 12 months of receiving the award.
  • The Fellowship period should be a minimum of 2 weeks.  It is not intended to part-fund an off-service year of training.
  • Recipients are required to provide a written report of their experience, including a critical appraisal of the centres visited and an assessment of the Fellowship’s impact on their career.
  • ‍Awardees will present their findings at a future ASGBI International Surgical Congress and may be invited to deliver an educational webinar.

This fellowship was a transformative journey through centres of excellence in minimally invasive HPB surgery-witnessing world-leading innovation, learning from masters in the field, and returning with insights that will directly enhance patient care and shape the future of our programme in Cambridge.
