ASGBI EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME

We are committed to delivering and supporting high-quality educational opportunities for surgeons at all stages of their careers. Our educational programme is designed to reflect the evolving needs of the surgical community and to promote excellence in general, emergency, and trauma surgery.

We aim to:

  • Provide innovative and accessible educational experiences.
  • Support lifelong learning and career development.
  • Promote diversity, inclusion, and best practice in surgical education.
  • Collaborate with partners to strengthen surgical training and care.

Types of educational activities

ASGBI supports a wide range of educational events, in-person and online, which fall into several categories:

Level 1 - ASGBI Flagship

These are major national events owned and delivered by ASGBI, including the annual ASGBI International Congress. These events are centrally managed and reflect our core educational priorities.

Level 2 - ASGBI Educate

These include:

  • Committee and Working Group Events: Developed by our specialty committees with support from the ASGBI team.
  • Regional Meetings: Organised by ASGBI Regional Representatives and tailored to local training needs.
  • Member-Led Events: Educational sessions proposed by ASGBI members and supported via their regional representative.

All of these are reviewed to ensure educational quality, relevance, and alignment with our values.

What to Expect:

  • Support from ASGBI Secretariat with marketing and administration (subject to approval).
  • Guidance on setting clear learning objectives and target audience.
  • Requirement to submit a post-event report including delegate feedback.

Apply to Host an Event:

  • Submit a detailed proposal to the Director of Education at least 4 months before the event.
  • Work through your Committee or Regional Representative (for regional/member events).
  • Include event aims, programme, budget, and sponsorship plans.

Level 3 - ASGBI Supported

We work in partnership with other professional organisations to co-develop and support educational events. Our support may include faculty involvement, branding, or promotional activity.

What to Expect:

  • Collaborative event delivery with external organisations.
  • ASGBI faculty involvement, branding, and promotional support.
  • Assurance of strategic alignment with ASGBI values.

Apply to Host an Event:

  • Submit a formal partnership request at least 4 months to the Director of Education.
  • Clearly outline ASGBI’s role (faculty, branding, promotion).
  • Provide event programme and relevant documentation for review.

Level 4 - ASGBI Endorsed

ASGBI offers endorsement for external events that align with our standards. Endorsement includes recognition of the event’s educational value but does not involve ASGBI in planning or delivery.

What to Expect:

  • ASGBI endorsement without direct involvement in event delivery.
  • Recognition of event’s educational value for ASGBI members.
  • CPD accreditation available upon approval.

How to Apply for Endorsement:

  • Submit the endorsement application form at least 6 weeks before the event.
  • Include full programme, previous evaluations (if recurring), and conflict of interest declarations.
  • Recommended for ASGBI member or Council-led events.

Event Inclusivity and Best Practice

We encourage event organisers to:

  • Ensure diverse faculty representation.
  • Provide accessibility for attendees with mobility or sensory needs.
  • Offer parent/child facilities when possible.
  • Cater for dietary and medical needs.

What stands out most is ASGBI’s commitment not just to surgeons, but to improving patient outcomes and shaping the future of surgical care. Being connected to this network feels both inspiring and rewarding.
