The Averil Mansfield Travelling Fellowship Award

The Averil Mansfield Travelling Fellowship Award, valued at up to £2500, is open to non-consultant doctors, including residents, SAS, and LED doctors engaged in general surgery, who are members of the ASGBI.

This award supports visits to centres of excellence in emergency general surgery (EGS) across the UK, Europe, or other developed healthcare systems worldwide. The focus is on learning from world leading models of service delivery and advancing clinical, managerial, and leadership skills.

This award celebrates the legacy of ASGBI Past President, Professor Averil Mansfield, reflecting her commitment to innovation and excellence in surgery, including her time spent broadening her horizons abroad.

Eligibility

To apply, applicants must:

  • Be a current member of the ASGBI.
  • Be a non-consultant doctor, including residents, SAS, or LED doctors engaged in general surgery.
  • Be a resident of the United Kingdom or Ireland.

Application Process

Initial applications must be submitted online by 25th February 2026.  Shortlisted candidateswill be invited to submit a full application by 31st March 2026 which should include:

  • A detailed description of their proposed itinerary and anticipated costs.
  • A full CV.

Visiting Centres

Applicants are encouraged to plan visits to no more than two centres, over a period of 1-2 weeks, to ensure a focused and meaningful experience. Travellers are responsible for making their own arrangements with their itinerary, including booking travel and accommodation. The award funding is intended to support these costs.

Recognition and Presentation

Awardees will receive a commemorative plaque featuring the ASGBI coat of arms. This will be presented at the ASGBI International Surgical Congress, after completion of travels, accompanied by a photo opportunity to celebrate their achievement.

Terms and Conditions

  • Applicants must be ASGBI members at the time of application and remain members for the following 12 months if successful.
  • Recipients must complete their visit within 12 months of receiving the award.
  • ‍Recipients will deliver a presentation on their experience at the ASGBI International Surgical Congress mainstage.
  • Recipients agree to acknowledge the ASGBI and the Averil Mansfield Travelling Fellowship Award when referring to their visit.
