The EDI Committee is dedicated to placing equality, diversity, and inclusivity at the heart of ASGBI’s organisational strategy and activities. The committee’s duties are aligned with ASGBI’s goals and focus on fostering an inclusive and diverse surgical community.

Responsibilities

Embedding EDI in Organisational Strategy

  • Place EDI at the heart of ASGBI’s goals, ensuring all activities, policies, and ambitions are inclusive and cater to every member and beyond.
  • Champion fairness and diversity in surgery by creating a culture of openness and support across the Association.

Supporting Under-Represented Members

  • Advocate for the needs of members who feel under-represented or less supported.
  • Develop mentorship programmes, educational resources, and training opportunities tailored to under-represented groups, including SAS doctors.
  • Collaborate with the Royal Colleges and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges to enhance professional development for SAS doctors.

Expanding and Diversifying Membership

  • Develop and implement strategies to engage with general surgeons who are not ASGBI members, identify their needs, and encourage active participation.
  • Promote ASGBI’s inclusive community through social media, conferences, and educational programs.
  • Encourage members to engage in national processes such as shortlisting, interviewing for National Selection, and examining for MRCS and FRCS.

Building Collaborative Links

  • Establish strong partnerships with national and international EDI groups and surgical societies (e.g., ACPGBI, ESCP, AUGIS, BOA, BOMSS).
  • Initiate and lead collaborative projects, educational workshops, and shared initiatives to promote EDI best practices across organisations.

Promoting EDI Awareness

  • Use ASGBI’s social media platforms and communication channels to raise awareness of inclusivity and equality issues.
  • Drive meaningful change by highlighting EDI initiatives and fostering engagement across the membership.

Enhancing EDI Resources

  • Lead the redesign of the EDI section on ASGBI’s website to ensure it is accessible, user-friendly, and reflective of the Association’s commitment to inclusion.
  • Provide relevant and meaningful content that promotes EDI initiatives and serves as a resource for all members.

Supporting ASGBI Leadership Goals

  • Collaborate closely with the President to deliver ASGBI’s aims and objectives surrounding EDI.
  • Ensure EDI considerations are integrated into the planning and execution of the International Surgical Congress and other national and regional meetings.
