As we move into the summer months, I have found myself reflecting on what has been an extraordinary year for the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland.
From our record-breaking Congress in Brighton, which attracted 765 abstract submissions and welcomed 907 surgeons from across the UK, Ireland and beyond, to the continued growth of our educational programmes, international collaborations and professional networks, there is much for us to celebrate. The energy, enthusiasm and sense of community demonstrated by our members throughout the year have been truly remarkable.
Yet, when I look back on the past twelve months, what stands out most is not any single congress, webinar, course or initiative. It is the people behind them. Over recent weeks, I have had the privilege of reviewing reports from our Directors, Committee Chairs, Working Groups, Regional Representatives, Moynihan Academy officers and external representatives. Collectively, these reports paint a picture of an Association that is vibrant, ambitious and deeply committed to supporting surgeons at every stage of their careers.
Across education and training, research, emergency surgery, trauma, sustainability, equality, diversity and inclusion, workforce development and international collaboration, an enormous amount of work is being undertaken on behalf of our members and our profession. Much of it happens quietly behind the scenes, often outside normal working hours, driven by individuals who generously volunteer their time, expertise and enthusiasm because they believe in what the ASGBI can achieve.
The impact extends far beyond the Association itself. This work influences national conversations, strengthens surgical training, supports professional development, fosters international partnerships and ultimately contributes to better care for our patients. Our Congresses, educational events, publications and advocacy work may be the most visible expressions of the ASGBI, but they are only possible because of the extraordinary network of members who work tirelessly throughout the year to make them happen.
To everyone serving on committees, working groups, regional networks and representative bodies, thank you! Your dedication, professionalism and commitment are the foundation upon which this Association continues to thrive. One of the greatest privileges of serving as President has been witnessing first-hand the talent, generosity and passion that exists throughout our membership. It gives me enormous confidence for the future. The ASGBI is not defined by any one individual or Council, it is strengthened by a community of surgeons united by a shared commitment to support one another, advance our profession and improve outcomes for patients.
As Summer approaches, I would like to wish all our members, partners and supporters a happy and restful break. I hope you have the opportunity to spend time with family and friends, enjoy some well-earned downtime, and return refreshed for the opportunities and challenges ahead.
If the past year has demonstrated anything, it is that when surgeons come together with a shared purpose, there is very little we cannot achieve.
Thank you for everything you do for the ASGBI, for surgery, and for the patients we serve.
Have a wonderful Summer.
Christian Macutkiewicz
President, ASGBI
