A Plug, a Pitch and a Party

In the West End of Glasgow, there is a popular production in a converted church (Òran Mór) called “A Play, a Pie and a Pint”. It showcases a theatre production, accompanied by food and drink. It has become an iconic experience, and was described as “A bedrock of the Scottish theatre industry” (The Guardian). I’m not intending to advertise for them, but I’ve appreciated the alliterative title for years, and it has inspired the title of this blog: “A Plug, a Pitch, and a Party”.

A Pitch: Why your colleagues should Join the Moynihan Academy

If you are receiving this email, you are already a member of the Moynihan Academy. But are all your colleagues members? The Moynihan Academy (and its parent organisation, the ASGBI) is a fantastic home for all resident doctors, SAS doctors, and medical students who work in or study emergency general surgery and trauma surgery.

Why not invite your surgical colleagues to join ASGBI? I think it’s a no-brainer. Of course, I’m biased, but don’t take my word for it. I asked ChatGPT what the main reasons were for joining the ASGBI Moynihan Academy, and here was its succinct answer:

1. Automatic MA Membership with ASGBI Membership
2. A Hub for Collaborative Learning & Inclusivity
3. Rich Portfolio of Educational Resources
4. Specialised, Hands-on Training
5. Career Guidance & Fellowship Support
6. Summary - Joining the Moynihan Academy offers a comprehensive package of educational, networking, and developmental benefits strategically aligned with the progression of surgeons in training. Whether you're just beginning your surgical journey, preparing for exams like the FRCS, or looking to contribute to research and audits, the Academy is structured to support your growth, skillset, and future leadership in surgery.

… I couldn’t have said it better myself ;)

A Party: Join the Party on Wednesday 12th November, Birmingham

Since our MA Trauma and Emergency Surgery Masterclass (Thursday, November 13) is taking place the day after the ASGBI EGS Symposium (Wednesday, November 12), many attendees may want to attend both. Because of this, we are planning to host an informal Moynihan Academy social event in the vibrant city of Birmingham on the evening of Wednesday, November 12th 2025 (venue and details to follow). Please join us for a night to remember!
