A look at the importance of sustainability to surgeons and what aspects of surgery need to change.

We are delighted to launch our top tips to becoming a sustainable surgeon led by Miss Cleo Kenington, ASGBI Lead on Sustainability.

‍Climate change is here, flash floods and forest fires are becoming a regular problem in the UK, and crops are failing around the world. It is vital that every person takes action at home and at work to reduce climate change gas emissions, to prevent further deterioration. The NHS is responsible for approximately 5% of the UK’s climate change gases. The operating theatre is an area of high emissions due to the impact of anaesthetic gases used, as well as the number of high energy devices, and the high amount of waste produced.

To help its members to reduce climate change gas emissions, the ASGBI has been a proud member of the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change for the last 2 years and is now launching a series of “Top tips” that can be made by every individual surgeon to make a difference at work.
