I am a Consultant General Surgeon at Southampton University Hospitals, with subspeciality committments to Endocrine and Breast Surgery. I am also a senior consultant surgeon to the Defence Medical Services, with whom I have deployed operationally as a reservist since 1975 to the Gulf, Iraq, Oman, Afganistan and elsewhere.

I have a wide range of academic interests. From 2003-2009 I was the Editor in Chief of the EJSO, and since 2009 have been the Medical Chair of Elsevier's international and multidisciplinary Content Selection and Advisory Board for SCOPUS, a major citation system. I also served on the Council of the international Committee on Publication Ethics from 2008 to 2010.

I have held a Hunterian Professorship of the Royal College of Surgeons for my work on the in vivo proliferation cell kinetics of human solid tumours under Professor Irving Taylor. I undertook my higher surgical training in Wessex and from 1994 to1999 I was Senior Lecturer in Surgery to Leicester University Hospitals under Sir Peter Bell.

I represent the work of the Association of Cancer Surgeons on its Council, having been the National Secretary from 2002 to 2002. I have also played an active role in the work of the ASGBI as a Council Member since 2008, for whom I also lead on a project to improve reporting systems for surgical risk management. I am a Regional Specialty Professional Adviser for the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

I am delighted to be able to help with advice as the South South Central Regional Rep for the ASGBI to trainees or consultants on any matters relating to the work of the ASGBI and its membership benefits.
