Saving Lives Reducing Violence - A One Day Conference

Conference Background

Trauma is one of the world’s leading killers and is responsible for the loss of more life years than any other disease. In 2010 knife killings totalled 200, 3 more than the 197 recorded in 2009. There were 6042 recorded crimes in which air weapons were reportedly used in the same year, 34% of which constituted violence against a person.

These statistics cannot however account for the global positioning of trauma among life threatening diseases as the amount of educational and research resources diverted to the study and development of more sophisticated and reliable techniques for dealing with these kinds of injuries pales in comparison to other areas of medicine.

Last year the Surgical Foundation in conjunction with the Metropolitan Police held a one day consensus conference focussing on the management of knife injuries, producing an innovative statement that outlined directives to support the clinical management of trauma and the development of educational resource materials relating to the prevention of street crime through a more holistic and...
