Mr Sriram Subramonia
Mr Subramonia was appointed as Laparoscopic Colorectal and General Surgeon in May 2012 with the remit of, among other things, establishing South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust as a centre of excellence in laparoscopic bowel surgery for the benefit of the local community.
Mr Subramonia completed his Higher Surgical Training from the East Midlands Healthcare Workforce Deanery (Trent). He was awarded an MD for his research at Newcastle University in 2007 and passed the Intercollegiate Fellowship Examination in General Surgery in 2009. He also gained the University Diploma in Laparoscopic Surgery from the European Institute of Telesurgery, University of Strasbourg, France during his surgical training.
Prior to his arrival at South Tyneside, Mr Subramonia worked as National Laparoscopic Colorectal Fellow at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust where he undertook specialist training in advanced Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery.
Apart from laparoscopic surgery, his other clinical interests lie in the surgical management of inflammatory bowel disease, daycase proctology, gastrointestinal endoscopy, early rectal cancer and incisional hernias. He is the Surgical Lead for National Emergency Laparotomy Audit and the IBD Surgical Lead in his Trust.
His other passion is medical teaching and training. He is a JAG-accredited colonoscopy trainer and a member of the teaching faculty at Newcastle Surgical Training Centre. Mr Subramonia has been a member of the National Selection Board for Specialty Trainees in General Surgery since 2013. He has also self–designed and delivered the Exam Course for Surgeons In Training (ECSIT) for the benefit of Higher Surgical Trainees in the Trent and North East. Mr Subramonia was appointed as College Surgical Tutor in May 2015.
