Mr Venkat Kanakala is a Consultant in Upper GI and Bariatric surgery at the James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough. He was appointed in 2015, following his higher surgical training in the North East of England. Following his CCT, he has done fellowships in bariatric surgery at the Saint-Jan hospital (Brugges, Belgium) and the Mayo Clinic (Minnesota, USA).

His main interests in clinical practice are Laparoscopic biliary surgery, anti-reflux surgery and a sub-specialty enthusiasm for metabolic and morbid obesity surgery.

He also has a passion for Medical education, and attained a Diploma in Clinical education at Newcastle University. He has been appointed as the Surgical tutor and Educational lead in General surgery for the South Tees NHS foundation trust in 2016. He has designed and organised several educational training events in the region, an example of which being the Course Director for RCS’s BSS course, lead for the SuppoRTT (work to return programme) that was run at the cadaver-training centre in Newcastle (NSTC). He is also a member of the Core and Higher specialty training committees, and a panel member of the ARCP.
