A First Class Service

Taught Courses and Workshops

A number of Taught Courses and Workshops will be offered throughout the meeting.

A Course Fee will be charged for attendance on these Courses in addition to the Conference Registration Fee applicable. Numbers are strictly limited and places will be allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, with priority given to members of the Association.

A detailed course programme for each taught course will be published in the New Year - please continue to check the website for further information.

Vascular Ultrasound - Please note that this course is fully booked
9.00am – 12.30pm, Wednesday 18th April 2007
Maximum 24 delegates
Course Fee: £50 if registering to attend the Annual Scientific Meeting, £100 if not.
Sponsored by SONOSITE.

The time is rapidly upon us when practical skills in the use of different modalities of ultrasound will be a necessity for every vascular surgeon. Tim Lees from Newcastle has developed a series of courses that are much in demand. Given the interest in non-operative techniques for the treatment of varicose veins, Tim felt that this would be a suitable area in which to start. The aim, using theory and practice, is to introduce delegates to the techniques for scanning veins and venous disease. There will be a demonstration of long and short saphenous incompetence, perforator incompetence and vein marking and interactive hands on training for various techniques such as duplex scanning, foam sclerotherapy and cannulation of a vein under ultrasound control. There will be ample opportunity to practice on live models and simulators using the compact machines available from Sonosite, the sponsors.

Abdominal Ultrasound incorporating Focused Abdominal Sonography in Trauma (FAST) - Please note that this course is fully booked
2.00pm – 5.00pm, Wednesday 18th April 2007
Maximum 24 delegates
Course Fee: £50 if registering to attend the Annual Scientific Meeting, £100 if not.
Sponsored by SONOSITE.
Understanding ultrasound and the focused use of ultrasound to detect intra-abdominal pathology is a valuable asset to surgeons. Malcolm Kell from Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin, has trained in ultrasound in both North America and Europe, and has developed a training course to introduce surgeons to abdominal scanning. The aim, using theory and practice, is to introduce delegates to the techniques for scanning: hepatobiliary disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm disease and the use of Focused Abdominal Sonography in Trauma (FAST). There will be initial description of basic sonography principles, the specifics of abdominal scanning and then interactive hands on training for abdominal scanning. There will be ample opportunity to practice on live models and simulators using the compact machines available from Sonosite, the sponsors.

Most of us will have a reasonable working relationship with this ubiquitous software but many will have watched in awe as some of our colleagues achieve all sorts of wizardry with embedded video clips, animated objects and so forth. Steve Lovell and his team have been providing superb AV services for the Association’s Annual Scientific Meetings for many years, so here is your chance to learn the tricks of the trade from some of the experts in the business. This practical course offers a brief refresher of basic PowerPoint before exploring more advanced PowerPoint options, such as embedding and translating videos and sound inserts into AV presentations, advanced animation, etc. Suitable for any-one with a basic knowledge of PowerPoint.
