Welcome

For many years we have been aware of the increased length of stay and cost of hospitalisation for those patients who develop nosocomial (hospital acquired) infections. Many factors have contributed to the increases in life threatening sepsis and the government and industry have been galvanised into action to meet targets to prevent surgical infections assuming endemic proportions.
This conference will look at the evidence base for good medical and surgical practice and how we can decrease the cost and impact of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and sepsis.
The speakers all come with particular expertise and there will be plenty of time for interactive discussion. We hope to have an audience representing a wide spectrum of interests, as well as representatives from the Surgical Royal Colleges, Specialty Associations and the Department of Health.
The morning session will be structured to present problems and possible solutions for each specialty and the afternoon will be dedicated to constructing solutions and developing a consensus. A Consensus Statement will be produced shortly after the event and widely disseminated.
