Greetings……..
A Forward from the President, Mr Denis Wilkins

Wonderful, dear”, emerges from under the bedclothes.
“Now Thursday”, says I, really getting into my stride, “Will be really good stuff CME. First part will be the specialties - for the first time not all within general surgery - giving a series of snappy fifteen minute presentations and their take on what is new, sexy and, well, of general interest. Rest of the day? Well, what can I say? We need to know how to manage the surfeit of civil disasters we seem to be having in these uncertain times and so some experts are taking us through their experiences. We missed Barbara Bass, from the States, last year but she is coming over to talk about workforce issues and another star from the USA, Murray Brennan, is bound to touch a few nerves when he talks about specialisation in cancer care. Terry Wilkin is going to spare some time from his radio and TV appearances (no sour grapes, honestly) to bring us up to speed on some of the intricacies of obesity, exercise and diabetes, etc. You know how we bang on about sloppy ward work, well, Ken Fearon and others will bring us the latest science on this and Nick Beeching is reckoned to give an excellent overview of infection - I hope to include flu, treatments, science and what’s on the horizon as well as the dreaded nosocomials…”.
“That’s a big word this early in the morning, my love”.
“….Harold Ellis is in top form these days and will send us away stimulated afresh with a talk on Surgical Heroes”.
Following a somewhat wounding, “That lets you out, dear” from the pillows, I continue, somewhat more stiffly, “then we have the dinner. Fabulous venue, the Museum of Scotland; much jollification and entertainment before during and after the meal – we have a really good speaker lined up – and so to bed and Friday. Now, Friday, which has always been fade-away-day in the past, is going to be a really special day. The specialties have been briefed to put on top-class specialty symposia for their members throughout the day. Not reheated material, but good solid stuff that will be attractive to their specialist members and make good use of limited time away from the workface. Looking at the programmes they have produced, I have to say that they are superb. Keynote speakers, CME, science; you name it and its all there. Should get over the parallel session problems that we have had in the past and, if we let people go by 15.30 hours, that should give time for getaway and home for everyone.”
“So there, my dear, I shall get cracking….oh, and we’re also putting on a digital photo competition and a competition for verse and worse and the golf, as usual, on an excellent course….”
Exit to sound of gentle snores. Hope to see you in Edinburgh.
Denis Wilkins
President
