British Journal of Surgery: How to Referee a Paper

The time is rapidly upon us when practical skills in the use of different modalities of ultrasound will be a necessity for every vascular surgeon. Tim Lees from Newcastle has developed a series of courses that are well-developed and much in demand. Given the interest in non-operative techniques for the treatment of varicose veins, Tim felt that this would be a suitable area in which to start. The aim, using theory and practice, is to introduce delegates to the techniques for scanning veins and venous disease. There will be a demonstration of long and short saphenous incompetence, perforator incompetence and vein marking and interactive hands on training for various techniques such as duplex scanning, foam sclerotherapy and cannulation of a vein under ultrasound control. There will be ample opportunity to practice on live models and simulators using the compact machines available from Sonosite, our sponsors. Again, numbers are limited and so early booking is advised.
