2011 Prize Winners
We ran a number of competitions at this year’s Congress. View the prize winners clicking on the relevant link below:
The Association’s annual International Surgical Congress took place from Wednesday 11th to Friday 13th May 2011 at the Bournemouth International Centre.
The conference marked the first year of running parallel sessions with specialty associations including BIFA, UKMSA, Association of Military Surgeons and ASPC. The development is part of the ASGBI’s commitment to working with speciality associations to support surgeons across Great Britain and Ireland. The intention is to develop this further for next year.
The theme of the Bournemouth Congress was ‘21st Century Surgery’ which looked past the current economic environment and, in addition to symposia dealing with clinical and scientific issues, many of the current political issues which are influencing all of our working lives were debated and discussed. There was no one that seemed to fit the bill better to do the welcome address than Mr Andrew Lansley (Secretary of State for Health), he gave a very insightful look into how 21st Century Surgery fits in with the political climate. We were also delighted to be joined by Lord Winston who gave the official opening address.
There were also the usual short paper, e-poster and poster presentations and a programme of taught courses and workshops addressed a varied range of topics from ‘Emergency Surgery’ to ‘How to Write a Clinical Paper’. We were delighted to have so many medical organisations organising their own taught sessions. In addition to having special e-poster sessions presented by the authors and scrolling on plasmas through the exhibition hall, the corridors and halls were full of excellent hard copy posters. E-posters will be available to view on the conference website along with photographs and footage of selected sessions.
The Congress delivered an interesting mix of sessions, diverse industry exhibition and a number of International College Lectures.
The ever expanding social programme and enjoyable activities included more competitions than ever before. The winners can be found on the prize winners page here.
Next year’s Congress will address ‘Expertise and Excellence’ and will take place from 9th to 11th May 2012; commit the dates to your diary now and we look forward to welcoming you to Liverpool next year!
